25th HandiCamp - Annual Camp for Severelly Handicapped Children and Adults

This was the most memorable camp i ever join in my life. I learned a lot during the camp and experienced many things i never try in my life before. I believed that what i experienced in there surely will give some effect in my life later.

The camp was held on 16th - 18th June of 2010 in Bethany Home. Bethany Home was the place where i undergo my community service for 6 weeks. For your information, Bethany Home's policy is to encourage and support people with a disability to live within their families and community. It aims to equip them with skills needed to become as independent as possible and contributing members of that community.

The aim of this annual camp is to provide time away from home in a camp like environment that is safe and suitable for our more severely disabled students. The volunteer ratio for this camp is two student to three volunteers, this being a more intensive caring situation for volunteers whereby the students are not to be left unsupervised at any time night or day.

In the camp, i had been assigned to take care of 2 students with others 3 volunteers who are the staffs of Bethany Home. The students are Thinakaran & Chun Hai. Thinakaran is physical disabled due to muscle palsy while Chun Hai is down syndrome. However, i take more responsibility on Thinakaran as i'm the only guy in the group.

Why i said this is the memorable camp i joined ever?
- Here, i had my first wheel chair using experience and played games with it.
- Here, i went out for outing with disabled person for the first time.
- Here, i carried a person up to the Leaning Tower of Teluk Intan for the first time.
- Here, i been poured by urine into my face for the first time when helping Thinakaran to pee.
- Here, i bathed disabled person for the first time.
- Here, i knew many people from all over the world & build up relationships with them
- Here, i understand the toughness faced by all these disabled person and the help we can give.
- Here, i understand that no matter how hard the road in front, you have to go through it with courage!
